WASHINGTON (AP) — never mind the presidential bully pulpit. these days, when the White House wants to get its message out, President Barack Obama and his aides are more likely to get the word out through Twitter or other social networking forum.
For example, the White House has used Twitter as a Web-based clearinghouse for public statements on everything from weighty subjects like the federal budget to the everyday, like personal grocery lists.
So far, 33,000 people have signed up to “follow” the White House press secretary and more than 6,000 are tracking his deputy.
Other top administration officials are following the White House lead on using social networking. U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice tweets about diplomacy, Assistant Secretary of State Arturo Valenzuela tweets about the Western Hemisphere and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke tweets about trade.
